CIA challenges fans to tell what time it is in deceiving snap

The CIA has conjured up a challenge to see whether people have what it takes to be a certified spy.

Members of the Central Intelligence Agency must be meticulous in order to successfully analyse global intelligence, and now it’s testing the public.

The agency asked people to “put your analytical skills to the test” by working out what time of the day it was in a wintery scene.

Its official Twitter account shared a photo of an icy road imprinted with tracks from school buses, and a quiet ski-resort.

The new puzzle challenges users to search for visual clues to work out if it’s 7am, 11am or 3pm.

Many of those who took part in the challenge found that the clues were hidden in amongst the parked cars, the school buses and the street lights.

The least popular guess out of the three was 11am at 13 per cent, which had one person writing: “Sun comes up in the east, so that rules out 3pm. It’s too high for it to be early morning, so that [rules] out 7am. Therefore 11am it is.”

Whereas 33.9 per cent of Twitter users thought the snap was taken at 3pm.

“The snow on the road has been worn down by a days traffic and there are no gritters out. Empty school buses are pulling in and lining up to take kids home. Sun is now in the West – houses are East facing,” penned a confident user.

Meanwhile, an eagle-eyed fan pointed out: “The clock tower in the photo says it 3:00 p.m”.

But the majority of people – at 53.1 per cent – thought that it was 7am due to the position of the shadows.

One person said: “The cars in the parking lot have snow on hoods. Long shadows. Nobody’s skiing yet. Only 1 car on the road. No pedestrians. My initial guess was, midnight in 1 of those climates where the sun’s up all year round in winter. Second best guess would be early as possible in the morning.”

Another guessed: “I think 7am, the long shadows of a rising sun in the east and the parked cars, implying many are still in bed. Am I hired?” while one user added: “I would say it’s 7 am because the streets have not been plowed yet, and seeing evergreen trees I bet they have snowplows and ample snow removal tools ready. I believe that if it was any other time of day the roads would be clearer since it is not currently snowing.”

The CIA later revealed that 7am was the right answer.

It tweeted: “Most of you guessed correctly. Seems like you all have an eye for this. You should check out our careers page. #DiscovertheCIA.”
